1000th dog rescued!

ARF just completed its 3rd Puppy Mill Rescue of 2010. 26 dogs of the 159 dogs in total rescued this trip, arrived at the ARF Adoption Center September 1st. These dogs will now live a better life. Most of them have never been out of a cage, or have taken a walk on a leash. ARF volunteers have been gathering at the Adoption Center to help walk and socialize these dogs to prepare them for their new start in life. Breeds include Malteses, Pappillons, Pomeranians, Pekingese, Poodles, Silky Terriers and Shih Tzus. ARF worked with humane partners Best Friends Animal Society to save these dogs from being euthanized. This trip marked a milestone, with the 1000th dog rescued since the inception of Best Friends efforts, a 7 year old Schnauzer appropriately named Miley, who is now safe at ARF. All animals still need to be medically cleared by Dr. Sarah Alward and then will be put up for adoption. Click here to fill out an adoption application.

Summer pet safety tips

Summer in the Hamptons means long days of fun outdoors in the sun. But the summer months can be dangerous for your pet. Keep the following tips in mind while enjoying your pet this summer. Don’t leave your pet in the car, even the healthiest of animals will suffer from heat exhaustion. Be courteous while on the beach. Fertilizers and garden products can be problematic for outdoor cats and dogs while certain plants are harmful to them. Grapes, raisins, avocado, onions, garlic, chives and alcohol are also dangerous. Make sure you pet is properly protected from fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. Read ARF’s hot weather tips.

just what the doctor ordered

It is no secret that animals have a calming effect on people and research shows the elderly tend to gain the most. ARF has partnered with the Hamptons Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Southampton over the past year to bring these therapeutic benefits to their residents. Volunteer Bucky Bezenberg leads this effort each week by taking an ARF dog and ARF cat to the Southampton facility. When ARF arrives you can see faces light up instantly. Read full press release.
